Passive Solar Residence
Mars, PA

This residence, designed in 1976, incorporates passive solar features in its design and construction. The site orientation is West Southwest to take advantage of the most efficient active and passive solar radiation. The roof slope is the most efficient slope for active solar, even though there is not a sufficient number of days of full sun in Western PA to make the installation of an active collection system cost effective.

The house contains a large atrium that enables the natural summer breezes to enter from the lower windows and exit from the upper windows. The large southern orientated porch excludes the living area during the summer, while it allows the winter sun to extend 12 feet into the same living areas.

The house was audited by the US Dept. of Energy as part of their study of passive solar buildings. This house ranked fourth in PA for energy conservation. The house was constructed as the personal residence for Roger A. Weaver, Architect and his family. It is now in private hands.
