DETAIL OF WASHINGTON’S MAP OF HIS TRIP THROUGH BUTLER COUNTY IN 1753
Roger A. Weaver,
Architect was retained to research the path that George Washington took to
travel from the Loggstown (near present day Ambridge) to Ft. LeBouef
(present day Waterford, PA). His 1753 trip was to deliver the ultimatum
that started the French and Indian War.
Mr. Weaver used an innovative research procedure of reviewing as many
historic maps as possible. By reverse analysis, Mr. Weaver was able to
ascertain what roads came later and what roads/paths were in the same
location over the years between 1737 and the 1820’s. As a result, he was
able to ascertain with an unusual degree of accuracy the actual path Major
Washington took through Butler County, PA almost 250 years ago!!
Mr. Weaver was also the first researcher to accomplish a comparative
physical (as opposed to historical) analysis of the diaries of George
Washington and his guide Christopher Gist. The two diaries were merged
into one document for direct comparative analysis. Looking at this
combined data as if he was the ‘engineer’ or ‘surveyor’ that Washington
was, Mr. Weaver was able to glean important data about the trip that has
never been published.
Mr. Weaver is preparing a monograph of his research for publication prior
to the 250th anniversary of his trip through Western Pennsylvania. Others
are apparently intent on usurping Mr. Weaver’s research and using his
unique and copyrighted (c.2001) process of the physical analysis (maps and
diaries) of this important historical event without proper attribution.
Mr. Weaver hopes that serious researchers will look to Mr. Weaver’s
upcoming monograph as the original source for this unique analysis of the
historically unique events of 1753.
